Just off the southwest corner of my property there is a beautiful cottonwood tree. It was a protected little notch in it, and every time I see it I think it would be the perfect place for an animal to hide. During a week of 40 below temperatures in January 2018 I spent several days hiking out to the tree with my camera waiting for the light to be just right. I finally captured the right photo when the sun was coming up one very cold morning. I perched a barn owl, also known as the ghost owl, on the tree because I wanted to capture the pink light of morning on his dramatic white feathers.
